THE RABBIT COLONY & OUR MISSION
Our mission is to be the best in the world in micro hydro electric and water resource management: by evolving innovative damless hydroelectric and water transfer technology. We create Today’s Tall Tree Nurseries to support Micro Finance for women farmers and their families using the Carbon Tax Fund, a new form of foreign aid. We export Mechanization for a more productive Rabbit Colony Farm.
1. Rabbit Colony Farm
Basics: land space needed is about 10 m² per breeding doe. Weaned rabbits are removed from mother and placed into separate enclosure(s). There are various options and methods for creating the “barrier”.
2. Rural Community:
Basics: a unit is a rabbit cage for 2 breeding does (1 m 2 or more in size) in a family backyard. A family can have more than one unit.
Option 1: weaned rabbits is sold to or exchanged for an adult rabbit at the rabbit farm
Option 2: family who wishes to keep weaned rabbits until they are 2 kg in weight can still sell to rabbit farm that helps in marketing.
The goal is to build a rabbit colony farm of 1 acre (4046 m²or 43,560 ft² ) and to contain about 1000 rabbits (asset value of 200,000 Ksh). One will have a 10 m wide canal surround it to serve as a physical barrier and to grow fish; instead of constructing a fence that extends 2 ft underground and at least 3 ft (1 m) high. The fish “canal” will also yield an income (wire fencing don’t).
In a free range rabbit keeping one must activate a self-catching system (otherwise you have to shoot them), one must keep the density of rabbit very low otherwise diseases will be a problem. Broilers, exceeding bucks and old does must be collected regularly and sent to the market. Greedy farmers tend to increase the number of rabbits quickly and lose the lot of them at the end.
There will be a need for a structure with indoor enclosures with outdoor “runs” to keep rabbits for a few days to prepare for an order for meat. For this there will have a multi-purpose building/workshop outside the “restricted” area (i.e. the 1 acre colony and the fish canal that borders it).
Since costs of construction of cages is the main hurdle, one approach is that weaned rabbits are delivered to the Rabbit Farm in exchange for adult rabbits. This way each family only needs to have only one cage and they can even avoid keeping a male adult. There are other benefits from their partnership with the Rabbit Farm, which will help to slaughter and market them.
It would be wise to build a proper peripheral fence. This is essential to avoid conflicts (people/thefts, owners of animals/predators). Eventually it needs to be done as the food situation becomes worse in the future.
It is amazing at the rate at which these rabbits give birth:
All families decide to maintain only 1 cage and able to deliver all their weaned kits (200) to the Rabbit Colony Farm every month. 200 kits will be traded for 50 adult rabbits from the farm and the families return home with them or sell them to the farm at about 180 Ksh each. The Colony Farm will also have 100 weaned kits every month from 50 breeding does. So with the best scenario, the Farm will have 300 weaned kits per month for raising.
Scenario 2: Families able to deliver 100 weaned kits per month (i.e. instead of 200). Families take 25 adults. Farm adds another 100 kits from its rabbit colony. Total : 200 weaned kits to handle every month.
Families do not deliver kits. Farm has its 100 weaned kits.

The Fish Farm
One can excavate a 215 m of circular canal x 10 m wide x 1 m deep (2000 m3) and this can also serve as a water reservoir. If one plans harvesting the fishes to coincide with the dry season, one can use the water after the harvest for crop irrigation.
The rabbit-fish system is an integrated system because all wastes will be used. (i) wastes from the rabbit colony will be used to grow earthworms and produce vermi-compost (ii) fish pond water will be used for crop irrigation (iii) rabbit hides will be tanned (iv) rabbit offal (entrails) and earthworms will be used as fish feed.
(i) Crush 100 rabbit heads every month and give them to the fishes. The catfish and tilapia will pick the brains and whatever that they can scavenge
(ii) Crush them and convert them into insect larvae and then feed the larvae to the fishes. (Remember if there are black soldier flies, then houseflies will not colonize the biomass.) (iii) You can feed several cups a day of dry rabbit pellets (feces) to 60 catfish in a 250 gallon tank.
Integrating fish (especially the tilapia with the rabbits is an excellent idea. You should separate the catfish from the tilapia. Catfish eat everything… even their own that are smaller than them. Cannibalism can happen a bit with tilapia if not fed enough. The fish make an extra source of protein and rabbit dung makes good fish food. The dung will also increase phytoplankton and zooplankton growth in the pond – superb food for tilapia fry. One needs to watch the pH levels and Dissolved Oxygen levels. But tilapia are very tolerant of low oxygen levels and will come to the top when this happens.
One should think how extra Dissolved Oxygen can be added quickly. One can use a waterfall within an aquaponics system with flow forms. A low-tech rope pump can be turned by hand to lift water to fall if there is no electricity.
Monitoring of the quality of water is important. In one case, canal water will be used for irrigation and river water will be used to replace the withdrawn water from the canal. One has basically no control in the quality of the input water from the river. However one can control/decide when one takes the water. Harvest of fish can be done during the dry season as water level in pond will be reduced due to higher evaporation.
There are several factors and guidelines to help increase the yield of fish. This is a science and art by itself. Kenya has a public service and support for fish farming and they can be consulted for their help too. Basic training of the local staff is important.
Fish can be smoked to add value to the product. Harvest can be planned so that agricultural residues such as dried maize stocks could be used. Instead of burning these on the fields, they can be used to enervate the smoke that is needed. Another way to add value is to make salted sun-dried fish.
A total of 1000 adult rabbits can support 1000 fish: each fish will have a swimming space of 2 m2 in the 2000 m2 moat. More fish can be added with the addition of other foods:
- Duckweed should be grown in a separate trough from the fish because otherwise the fish would consume the whole stock. Aeration is not necessary and water should flow at a slow rate through the trough. Duckweed can be grown in sun-exposed or half-shaded places. Duckweed is also a useful feed for poultry and rabbits. Duckweed can double its mass every 1–2 days in optimum conditions, which means that one-half of the duckweed can be harvested every day.
The duckweed trough will be located before the nutrient water enters the micro irrigation system. Any nutrients that escape the plant grow beds fertilize the duckweed.
- Sometimes insects are referred to as “micro-livestock”. The small space requirement means that insect farms can be created with very limited areas as fish feed, like the black soldier fly, which are extremely high in protein. When culturing black soldier flies, types of waste (manure, dead animals and food waste) are placed in a compost unit that has adequate drainage and airflow. As the larvae reach maturity, they crawl away from their feed source through a ramp installed in the compost unit that leads to a collection bucket.. Two-thirds of the larvae can be processed into feed while the remaining one-third should be allowed to develop into adult flies in a separate area. The adult flies are not attracted to any human activities. Adult flies simply mate and then return to the compost unit to lay eggs, dying after a week. Black soldier flies have been shown to prevent houseflies and blowflies in livestock facilities.
- Moringa or kalamungay Moringa oleifera is a species of tropical tree that is very high in nutrients, including proteins and vitamins. There has been success in several aquaponic projects in Africa using leaves of this tree as the only source of feed for tilapia. For leaf production, all of the branches are harvested down to the main trunk four times per year in a process called pollarding.
Aquaponics requires a very small footprint while producing splendidly: a cultivating of plants in water, which is a natural integration. The plants feed off the nitrates from the fish water. It takes a few months for the system to mature with all the bacteria adequately grown to convert ammonia to nitrites, and nitrites to nitrates. Be warned: the urine from the rabbit eventually raised the pH levels to unacceptable levels.
To increase products off the learned skills of raising rabbits, some of the rabbits can be wool rabbits in time… Leather can make clothes and blankets… etc. One can buy French Angora rabbits because they are a good dual purpose breed (meat and wool). By contrast, the Canadian Dorwan Giant Rabbit are reared very efficiently for meat purposes.
An Assortment of Different Color Rabbit Hides
Another integration are goat houses, which can be constructed over fish ponds so that the goat droppings could be swept into the ponds with tilapia fish.
In rabbit droppings there are a lot of multi-type amino acids, vitamin, etc. If the droppings can be used to feed hogs it can save large amount of feed. But rabbit droppings smell odor and it’s not tasty for pigs. One can use a simple method to change the flavor of droppings to a sour-fragrant taste so that pigs like to eat. A method can use effective microorganisms (EM) or beneficial microorganisms (BM) to treat rabbit droppings.
The rabbit drops account for more than 90% of feed for pigs. The investigation indicates that there is no bad effect on the quality of pork. Practice indicates that droppings from 15 adult rabbits can raise one pig from 15 kg to 100 kg in four months. If one raises 60 rabbits and 12 pigs in a year one can earn more than 4000 Ksh profit. It is a benign recycling of animal husbandry. Vermicompost is the product or process of composting using various worms, usually red wigglers, small red worms (not to be confused with the large garden variety) to create a heterogeneous mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials. It is a natural, odourless, and an aerobic process.
It would take around 20 adult rabbits to supply enough feces to grow worms in to feed around 20 catfish. With the addition of unprinted cardboard, newspapers and some household garbage you could grow more. Caution: if you add too many worms in for the fish, your nitrate levels will spike.
Rabbit urine is also used as organic spray to fight pests in vegetables and other crops: a litre of the urine costs Sh100 .
BEES + TREES = HONEY = MONEY
Beekeepers have a strong dependence on Australian eucalyptus trees (gums) as a forage resource for their honey bees. Six Eucalyptus species provide a reliable pollen source and nectar flow, and because different species flower at various times of the year they provide a steady forage resource for colonies.
The idea is to sell marinated rabbit meat. Marinating with garlic and lemon will serve as preservatives as well as for flavoring the meat. It will also serve as a “certification” from the source. There are a few marinate recipes to make the meat tender. The only effective system to encourage widespread habit of eating rabbit meat is to make people taste it. First time people must be invited. The way of cooking meat must be shown. A lot of way of preparing rabbit dishes are known. Rabbits have lean meat (i.e. does not have much fat) and it can withstand longer hours without turning rancid. If marinated for grilling it can remain good without refrigeration for several hours and even over night.
Local butcheries sell rabbit meat for 250 ksh/kg, supermarkets can sell it for 450 Ksh per kilo and restaurants can make their money at 1000 Ksh per plate. All these operations have different overhead costs.
A two-month-old rabbit for breeding fetches for at least 2,500 Ksh . It is for this reason that most farmers rear rabbits to sell for breeding. The real price is 1000 Ksh for an adult Flemish giant breed and just 500 Ksh for a 6-8 week weaned rabbit at government rabbit breeding centers. Rabbit Network Kenya sell breeders (Californian and NZ whites) at 200 Ksh each (3-4 months old).
In Kenya where “mistrust” level is generally high, people quickly think that a dressed rabbit looks like a cat. The suggestions are:
(i) not to remove rabbit heads (with the ears) on samples.
(ii) start with one butchery and provide on a specific day of the week only your supply of rabbits. This will enable the butchery to gain the confidence of the people that one is selling rabbits and not cats.
One can launch the colony rabbit farm in 1 month: the manual construction of the fish canals around the rabbit farm will take a few months due to lack of funding (unless someone can offer the use of a bulldozer for a week). It will take 4-5 months for the rabbit colonies to establish themselves and by doing that land-based nutrients from rabbit enclosures will begin to leach into the ponds whenever it rains. Rabbit droppings and sweepings from the enclosures will be buried into the ground to reduce excessive leaching and for vermiculture. The timing is also correct for earthworm production and its use when one introduces the catfish several months after the tilapia.
Six months (or less) after the project start up, the rabbit colony should be able to provide 100 adult rabbits every month. This means that every month, 100 rabbit hides will be available for tanning. Tanned hides can be crafted to make jackets, ornamented on bags as a value-added item, pillow covers for sofas, and a variety of other items and souvenirs (e.g. rabbits tail and feet). One should interest target groups to be involved in making these.
So in the first year one will have enough time to (i) establish an operational rabbit farm rather quickly in partnership with the 50 families, (ii) a start-up the fish project and production of fish feed. The 2nd year will be used to observe and monitor the material flow of the two sub-systems. By then, one should be able to start to use the nutrient-rich canal water for intensive crop cultivation in the 2nd-3rd year period.
By starting with backyard rabbit keeping, rabbit keepers can realise and calculate how much feed is needed if they wish to have a farm. When feed is low, backyard rabbit keepers can just ask their children to scavenge for greens. When you start a community farm, the energy to scavenge is much less.
In Kenya, farmers who join the program MUST visit any of five farms in Kiambu, Nakuru and Uasin Gishu rabbits farms to see for themselves how the cages have been constructed as per the set specifications.
Most of the ideas from this document comes from inspiration for the Rabbit Fish Farm that won the contest of ideas to develop rural Africa: Jacky Foo of Stockholm, Sweden, who won the U.S.$20,000 grand prize of Africa Rural Connect, an online contest that drew some 10,000 participants over four months. The Africa Rural Connect online community is just beginning and they will continue posting their ideas. Foo’s vision is outlined in detail on the ARC Web site and also on the Rabbit Network Kenya site. For more pictures of this project visit the album on Jacky Foo’s Facebook page.

BILLIONS OF CHRISTIANS CAN’ T ALL BE WRONG!
Christianity is not a philosophy, but it is a relationship with God, your Creator, in Christ TODAY. It is not knowledge of abstract principles.
HOW DO WE KNOW THIS?
Some Christian disciples use deliverance to deliver away evil spirits influencing people. These evil spirits cause depression, addictions and illness through all forms of stress.
2. COMPLETE SENSE OF PEACE?
After you have been delivered from evil influences, you will have a definite physical experience of a complete sense of peace.
Once you experience a physical sense of peace because of deliverance, you know that you will be healed. This helps you build up your faith, which is very crucial: No faith! No healing!
Some Christian disciples have the gift of healing. Only the Name of Jesus Christ makes healing and deliverance possible.
THE WHOLE FAMILY BENEFITS
In the end, one Christian conversion will benefit the whole family. The gifts of the Holy Spirit of healing and deliverance will help the whole family. A prayer of deliverance of evil spirits will leave any member of the family with a complete sense of peace immediately. A prayer of healing from a Christian disciple produces 80% healing. The remaining healing comes from continued prayer of praise and thanksgiving until all the healing is complete. This healing comes from the Holy Spirit through the power in the Name of Jesus Christ. No other god or deity or doctor uses this power. This proves the TRUTH OF CHRISTIANITY.
God divinely inspired the BIBLE . How do we know? Each of eight accurate predictions shows a high probability mathematically. The probability of one individual fulfilling eight prophecies have odds of 1 in 10 17 (1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000). Jesus Christ fulfilled all prophecies, therefore the Bible MUST BE TRUE.
The Old Testament indicates another 40 astonishing predictions.
Christianity experiences stunning growth—from approximately 3.8 million adherents in China in 1956 to an estimated 87 to 100 million Christians today.
HOW IS JESUS STILL ALIVE TODAY?
Jesus is alive today! He heals today (through His followers) and in many cases it is realized immediately. How else can you explain the explosion of Christianity, the world’s largest religion, on earth: 2.2 billion adherents, nearly a third (31 percent) of all 6.9 billion people on Earth.
Christians know and feel His Presence; they communicate with Him personally; Christian prayers are always answered.
This author has been given the Gift of Healing only because he is a Christian Lay Missionary, who travels two to three places every year. On his last trip to Columbia he successfully transferred his Gift to his Spanish translators, who were able to heal as he did. He has healed Muslims to their great surprise.
He also delivers away evil spirits along with their healing. All those who are delivered from evil spirits feel a complete physical sense of peace.
DREAMS AND VISIONS
God can give a message to those non-Christians to change their heart. God knows faith will be developed eventually. God will come to you in the form of dreams or visions. So be sensitive to any dreams or visions, when you ask God for it earnestly.
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED HOW TO BECOME A CHRISTIAN?
- Christians don’t shout, “I live a clean life!” Christians whisper “I feel lost, but now God found me and God forgives me.”
- Christians don’t speak with pride. They confess that they stumble and need Christ to be their guide.
- Christians don’t say,” I’m strong.” They say they try to be strong because they need strength.
- Christians don’t brag about success, but they admit that they fail and they need God to clean the mess.
- Christians don’t claim to be perfect, but God still believes in them.
- Christians still feel the sting of pain. They have their share of headaches but they still call upon His Name.
- Christians are not holier than others. They are simple sinners who receive God’s unbelievable Grace.
Christianity on a Table Napkin:
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9
God the Father will wipe every tear from our eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, crying out or pain. We will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is The Holy Spirit will have made all things new. Eternal joy will begin. “For the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is His name.” Luke 1: 49
Are we not like Barabbas who was justly condemned for murder, but saved by the innocent Jesus on the cross? Are we not like the adulterous woman, deserving of death by stoning, to whom Jesus says, “I do not condemn you”? And Jesus saved them both. In fact, Jesus came to earth specifically to look for and save those who were lost, like you.
“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool”. Isaiah 1:18
You may need some counseling with a pastor, priest or competent Christian worker, who will introduce you to a Short Course on Who is Jesus? Start by reading a short biography of Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. Read several verses before going to bed and read the same verse upon arising. He will defend you from attacks of the enemy when you ask Him.
